POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for ongoing review and analysis of coding, abstracting and MS-DRG assignment. This position reports to the HIM/Clinical Coding Supervisor and directs the day-to-day operations in Coding. Responsible for keeping the HIM Clinical Coding Supervisor informed of workflow status and potential backlog issues. Maintain a process improvement plan to ensure efficiency and quality in the workflow. Keep up-to-date on Medicare, ICD-10, DRG and CPT coding and documentation guidelines. Participate in the coding of inpatient and outpatient charts. Maintain defined accuracy and productivity standards for coding. Communicate with coders on Work Queue (WQ) outcome and improvement recommendations Works closely with the Manager, Clinical Coding to coordinate and complete work in the most effective and efficient manner .

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:

  • Oversee the daily communications and functions of Clinical Coders.

  • Initiates appropriate clinical documentation querying in order to acquire or clarify necessary medical record documentation needed to facilitate accurate and complete coding & abstracting.

  • Understands and has working knowledge of overall HIM & CDI processes and software applications.

  • Demonstrates problem solving skills, the ability to work independently, and the ability to perform under pressure in a positive, teamwork manner with diplomacy and tact.

  • Participates in HIM and other Departmental meetings with clinical data, graph analysis and financial findings as needed.

  • Participates with further review of compliance audit results. Analysis with identification of trends and communication to the coding staff. Follows through with coding corrections as necessary.

  • Must possess excellent interpersonal verbal and written communication skills to accurately relay information to staff and to internal and external customers.

  • Serves as Timekeeper for Time and Attendance of clinical coders.

  • Coordinates updates and participates in testing functions to encoding software.

  • Performs clinical coding function when necessary.

  • Demonstrates collaborative, team oriented approach


  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).

  • Formal education in ICD-10-CM coding, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.

  • Two(2) to three (3) years experience in ICD-10 CM and CPT-4 coding principles/guidelines

  • Two(2) to three (3) years experience in MS-DRG assignment.

Must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) and/or AAPC Certifications (CPC, COC).

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Health Information Management with certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).

  • Associate of Science degree in Health Information Technology with certification as Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).


  • One (1) year experience in instructional/training skills.

  • Must demonstrate extensive knowledge of coding, sequencing, and documentation guidelines.

  • Must have strong quantitative and analytical skills.

  • Must have experience in ICD-10 CM/PCS and CPT/HCPCS coding of Surgery/Outpatient Ancillary/ED medical records in hospital and/or outpatient clinic.

  • Demonstrates proficient computer skills and Microsoft Office preferred.
